mu summit 2026

MORE VOICES. DEEPER CONVERSATIONS.

17 April 2027

The Black Diamond, Midlands, UK

Building on the conversations that began in 2025, 2026 brought young creatives, educators, community organisations, statutory services and the music industry together to go deeper into REACH, ROUTES and REALITY, exploring how we can create more connected, accessible and sustainable pathways into creative careers.

OUR AIMS IN 2026:

EVENT SUMMARY:

The second MU Summit built directly on the conversations that began in 2025, taking the three themes that emerged from the inaugural event REACH, ROUTES and REALITY and using them as the framework for a deeper exploration of creative career pathways. Across keynote presentations, panels, interviews and audience discussions, young creatives sat alongside educators, grassroots organisations, statutory services and music industry professionals to examine how people discover opportunities, navigate their own routes and access the knowledge, relationships and support needed to progress.

Throughout the day, the conversation moved beyond simply identifying barriers towards considering how the ecosystem could become better connected. Discussions highlighted the importance of trust, community spaces, lived experience, industry knowledge, practical experience, networks and realistic expectations, while repeatedly returning to the challenge of fragmented provision and poor signposting. By the end of the Summit, a clear priority had emerged: better map and connect the organisations, opportunities and resources that already exist, while continuing to bring the different parts of the creative pathways ecosystem into the same conversation.

KEY THEMES

Through keynote presentations, panels, interviews and audience discussions the following key themes emerged.

CONNECT

The opportunities exist but the ecosystem remains disconnected.

Schools, colleges, youth services, grassroots organisations, venues, industry and community initiatives are all doing valuable work, but often don’t know enough about one another. Participants repeatedly described organisations working in silos and the need for stronger communication and collaboration.

MAP

We need to make the pathways visible.

A major development was the call to identify and map the organisations, opportunities, spaces and resources available to young creatives.

EQUIP

Access to an opportunity isn’t enough, young people need the knowledge and tools to navigate it.

Throughout the day, speakers returned to business knowledge, copyright, publishing, income, audience development, branding, networking, resilience and entrepreneurship. The Summit highlighted a gap between learning how to create and understanding what to do with that creativity afterwards.

SUSTAIN

Getting into the creative industries is only part of the challenge, building a sustainable career is another.

The Reality discussions explored finances, rejection, mental health, expectations, entrepreneurship, portfolio careers, resilience and the difference between social-media perceptions of success and the reality of building a career.

The discussion explicitly reframed success away from simply becoming a superstar and towards being able to make a sustainable living from a portfolio of creative work.
